INTRODUCTION
The Trail Sauna is a small, functional retreat designed for year-round use. The sauna is Placed on a small trail leading from the Sechelt Inlet up to the family home. This small-but-mighty project takes full advantage of a beautiful setting while adding a practical, well-used space to the property.
Custom saunas are growing in popularity across the Sunshine Coast, and it’s easy to see why. These low-footprint builds that offer big benefits in our coastal climate. This one was designed to fit seamlessly into the landscape and the family’s daily routines.
INSIGHT
The client wanted a comfortable, low-maintenance outdoor sauna that felt tucked away but was still easy to access. They’d been dreaming of something simple: a warm space to unwind after time on the water, or to shake off a damp winter day.
Built directly on their existing deck, we worked with the natural layout of the lot to place the sauna along the path to their dock—making it a great pit stop after a paddle or swim. They also wanted to keep the view a priority, so we made sure the interior layout and window placement kept the inlet front and centre.
CONSTRUCTION CONSIDERATIONS
Working with an Existing Structure
We assessed and repaired the original deck before building the sauna into the space. This allowed the new build to integrate smoothly into the flow of the property while extending its use.
Durable Materials
The sauna exterior is clad in aluminum siding for long-term durability in our coastal conditions. Cedar was used throughout the interior as it’s moisture-resistant, naturally antibacterial, and gives off that classic, authentic sauna aroma.
THE OUTCOME

FINAL THOUGHTS
The Trail Sauna shows how even small structures can be rich in design and purpose. Tucked into the trees, it offers a space for stillness, warmth, and connection to the land.
