INTRODUCTION

When C approached us with his vision of a custom home sauna, we couldn't have been more excited. Built right on the water on the Lower Sunshine Coast, BC, the lot offers a stunning view of the Sechelt Inlet, making it the perfect spot for creating a cozy sanctuary.

Given British Columbia's climate, which is reminiscent of Scandinavian countries, it's unsurprising to see British Columbians embracing sauna culture. About 50% of Finns reportedly have a home sauna, due to the numerous health benefits and deep relaxation saunas provide. With a growing trend of homeowners transitioning from traditional indoor saunas to custom-built outdoor versions, we were eager to dive in.

PROJECT OVERVIEW

C envisioned a home sanctuary, a spa-like retreat where the family could unwind and rejuvenate. Their design brief? A simple yet robust, modern structure that complements the natural surroundings. Being able to enjoy the view over the water while relaxing was important to them. Building upon their existing deck, we crafted an outdoor sauna that's the ideal relaxation space. The location is prime: the sauna is perfectly situated on the stairway leading from the main house down to the pontoon, making it an inviting pitstop after a day spent paddling or a soothing pick-me-up on a cold wintery evening.

THE BUILD

The existing deck was a great foundation, however there was some maintenance to do to have it ready for the sauna build. We carried out a few repairs and treated some early rot. We integrated the sauna into this space, ensuring that when seated on the sauna benches and looking through the window you get a clear view of activity on the water. As the sun sets or rises, the sauna is bathed in a soft, ambient light, elevating the experience of relaxation.

Embracing the chilly coastal winters, this outdoor sauna offers a juxtaposition: the warmth of the sauna against the crisp winter chill. For added durability against brisk coastal weather, the sauna was clad in aluminum siding. Cedar was chosen for the sauna interior, and is a prized material well known for its longevity, durability, ability to withstand moisture and of course, it’s distinctive scent.

This sauna, with its thoughtful design and placement, seamlessly aligns with the surrounding environment, offering a sanctuary of warmth and well-being.
